  19. imagine.  Comparing Perl to something like Icon or SNOBOL4, I can't see how Perl 
  20. would even stand a -prayer-.

  24. Can you suggest ANYTHING that they're better at, in terms of text processing, 
  25. than either SNOBOL4 or Icon?  Perl is a POOR second to either one, and I doubt 
  26. that HyperTalk or AppleScript are any more competitive.

  35. the languages we're all so indebted to Ralph Griswold for!

  37. Jeez, I can hardly believe that we're even carrying on such a ludicrous 
  38. discussion here, in the Icon group, where presumably we all KNOW better than to 
  39. waste our time trying to even THINK about doing text processing with junk like 
  40. Perl, or HyperCard, or AppleScript.  I mean, this isn't exactly like a dumb 
  41. general programming conference where people could claim ignorance of Icon or 
  42. SNOBOL4 or anything.
